Choice

Choice

Choice is a big part of life. The choices I make determine what type of life I will have. Nobody chooses what type of things will occur in my life but myself. Making a choice sometimes is hard and might not seem right.Thinking through it would help in the decision making. As an example, a tough choice I have made is choosing whether or not I would continue with my education. I fell behind and made a few mistakes that kept me off the wrong track but my choice was to continue and not give up.

"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost focuses on choice. The main character has to make a choice, choosing which road to take. While making his choice he says "and I looked down one as far as I could, to where it bend in the underground. Then took the other, as just as fair.", his statement explains that he struggled in making his decision but in the end he doesn't regret it, "I--I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." No matter what, choices come with big responsibilities. Whether its a good choice or bad choice the character is going to have to deal with the outcome of his choice.

"Hispanic Legend of La Llorona" by Joe Hayes is a short story that mentions the importance of choice. The main character, "Maria", makes the choice of killing her children only because of jealousy. She realizes that she made a mistake but unfortunately it is too late. I personally think that her choice was a really bad one, because her kids didn't do anything to her. As all kids are they love their parents no matter what and she took her anger out against two innocent kids who had no blame for her broken marriage. Like all other choices that are made, each and every one of them has consequences and this choice that Maria made had a very big one.

A short story based on the importances of choice is "DEAD END" by Rudolfo Anaya. The main character is a girl named Maria. She is a senior in high school with very big responsibilities because her mother passed away and she is left as the head of house hold. Her father spends most of his time at work and maria has to look out for her younger siblings. She finds herself in a difficult situation where she has to pick between her school work, keeping the promise she made to her mother before she passed away or having fun like all the other kids in her school. Maria falls in love with a boy, Frankie Galvan, which is known as the cool guy that only goes out with pretty girl and isn't really interested in school. He is more of a gang member and he smokes marijuana. One night he takes Maria for a drive and offers her a cigarette, and Maria finds her self making a really though choice. She sets aside her wants and needs and refuses to become like every other girl in her school. She reminds herself that she made a promise to her mother about finishing her education and she doesn't want to end up like "La Llorona", a story her mother use to tell her. I believe that Maria made a really good choice and ultimately her choice would've affected her only but she made the best one, thought it through and she will make not only herself proud but her family as well.
